Background

Global healthcare company Ascensia Diabetes Care has been a leader in diabetes treatment for over 70 years, and is known primarily for producing blood glucose meters. In 2017, they engaged IDEO with a new goal of moving the company beyond physical devices; Ascensia envisioned a first-of-its-kind approach to educating and monitoring diabetes patients. They wanted to build a comprehensive solution—one that would not only take glucose readings and record meals, but would recognize the complex and important factors that impact a person's health.


Project

Through intense collaboration, Ascensia and IDEO created a holistic app-based service called Abound. Abound brought together data and tracking, real-life mentorship, and personalized content to create an experience that considered the whole person and their unique health journey. I worked with a full user experience and data science team to develop the content side of the experience, drawing on existing research and our findings to translate the needs of people living with diabetes into information and interactions.

Activities & Deliverables

  • User Interviews: Interviewed a series of people living with Type 2 diabetes to better understand their relationship to health, wellness, and habits.

  • Mobile App: Collaborated with information architects and visual designers to determine content flow, placement, and prioritization, and craft final app copy. This effort included headlines, descriptions, and microcopy, as well as shaping fun facts, recipes, and articles from various diabetes educators.

  • Packaging: Created copy for the physical package portion of the Abound experience and worked with visual designers to marry it to the visuals.

  • Abound Movement video series: Wrote original video scripts for a series of in-app exercise videos.
